SK Hynix Platinum P51 Gen5 SSD equipped with 238L NAND unveiled at GTC

According to products displayed at the GTC 2024 booth, SK Hynix will soon launch its first Gen5 consumer NVMe SSD series. The Platinum P51 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD will take over the flagship duties of the Platinum P41, which has been on the market for more than a year.

Similar to the Gold P31 and Platinum P41, the Platinum P51 also uses an internal SSD controller. The key update is the move to PCIe Gen5 and the use of SK Hynix’s 238L TLC NAND. Other details are scant and we’ve reached out for more information.

Only peak sequential access numbers were available at the GTC booth, suggesting the drive’s firmware is still being tweaked. It’s unclear how those numbers will change based on capacity. Availability and pricing have also yet to be revealed.

This is a big launch for the Gen5 consumer SSD market, which has a fairly limited number of available options. The Phison E26 controller and Micron’s B58R NAND combination is already second generation (the latest version has NAND running at 2400 MT/s), but other vertically integrated vendors like Samsung, Western Digital/Kioxia and SK Hynix ( Until now) focus more on the fourth-generation market with higher adoption rates.

We’ll update the piece with more information once the specs are officially released.
