MediaTek caused a huge stir when it launched the Dimensity 9300 chipset late last year because the processor eschewed small CPU cores in favor of only powerful ones. It looks like the Taiwanese chip designer may stick with this aggressive approach for its next-generation chips.
According to the Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, the Dimensity 9400 will once again abandon the small CPU core and instead use the Cortex-X5, Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A7xx series cores. The leaker didn’t reveal the CPU layout, but if it’s something like the Dimensity 9300, then we can expect 1 Cortex-X5, 3 Cortex-X4 cores, and 4 Cortex-A730 cores.
On paper, this would be an extremely powerful CPU setup, but the Dimensity 9400 will face stiff competition from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 later this year. Qualcomm has confirmed that this will be the first smartphone chipset to use a custom Oryon core. So we’re curious to see how both processors perform in this regard.
This isn’t the only information we’ve heard about MediaTek’s next flagship processor, with MediaTek itself confirming that its next-generation chips will be manufactured using the 3nm TSMC process. Smaller manufacturing processes often mean smaller, more efficient designs.

Digital Chat Station added that the Dimensity 9400 is scheduled to launch in October, so we will likely see the first phone with this chip launched in China before the end of 2024.
The leaker also claims that the Dimensity 9300 Plus chip will be launched in May as a mid-year update. They added that it will have a 3.4GHz peak clock speed and a GPU clocked at 1.3GHz. The current peak frequency of Dimensity 9300 is 3.25GHz, but MediaTek did not disclose the GPU frequency.
Regardless, we hope to see the Dimensity 9400 in more global phones, as the only widely available Dimensity 9300 phones are the vivo X100 and X100 Pro.
