long story short

  • Samsung Galaxy A55 users have reported that the software update page now shows two installation stages.
  • The March 2024 patch may have introduced seamless Android updates for the Galaxy A55.
  • Samsung’s other smartphones don’t seem to have seamless updates yet.

Samsung has long resisted any attempts to persuade it to adopt Android seamless updates. This feature allows updates to be downloaded in the background, allowing owners to continue using their device until a reboot is required. However, recent reports suggest that the tech giant may have finally changed its stance on the feature, at least for the Galaxy A55.

According to Mishaal Rahman, users of the recently launched Galaxy A55 have reported that after updating their phones, the software update screen now shows two installation stages. There seems to be a “Download and Install” and a “Verification” phase now.

Samsung may finally have seamless updates on its Android devices! When updating the new Galaxy A55 5G, users noticed that the software update screen now shows “Download and Install” and “Verify” steps.

When downloading and installing updates, Samsung often requires users to restart their device to complete the installation. Users cannot use their devices until the entire process is completed. However, these Galaxy A55 owners appear to be able to continue using their phones as the update is downloaded in the background.

The development is further supported by a report mobile indians. The outlet added that they noticed this two-stage installation process occurred after installing Samsung’s March monthly patch.

While the Galaxy A55 now appears to be capable of seamless updates, Samsung doesn’t appear to have implemented the feature in its product portfolio yet. As of now, the company’s other phones appear to still be using the old installation method.

Recently, a comment was discovered in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) claiming that Android is preparing to stop supporting “non-A/B” updates. A/B refers to two partitions for seamless updates. The lack of support will make it difficult to update like Samsung does. Samsung may be preparing for this ultimate seamless update-exclusive future.
