The stories of Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann have been completed for good, and Disney and the producers confirmed, to the surprise of no one but the most hopeful Johnny Depp fans, that they’re working on Find other options for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
We’ve been talking for a few years about the adventure movie series finding fresh waters, with people as talented as the writers behind Deadpool or Margot Robbie trying to bring new ideas to the series, but it seems Disney is carefully considering its options before moving forward with another set of pirates and an entirely new storyline.

Via ComicBook.com, legendary Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has worked on all previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies (now available to watch on Disney+), spoke to the site about The Ungentlemanly War Department ), who confirmed the current status of Disney IP and what they want to do. “It’s hard to say. You don’t know, you really don’t know… you don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know,” he said. “Because with ‘Top Gun,’ you There’s an iconic and talented actor. I can’t tell you how many movies he made before Top Gun. But we’re rebooting Pirates so it’ll be easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for some actor.”
Depp’s name doesn’t come up explicitly, but you know Bruckheimer is referring to the actor who has been the face of the franchise for more than a decade and is partially responsible for the five films’ massive box office grosses. In fact, while you might think the fifth installment was a failure, it actually made nearly $800 million in theaters worldwide. Of course, with all the money problems piling up and Disney looking back at past triumphs, it’s only a matter of time before Pirates of the Caribbean returns.
As for Depp and the whole idea of rebooting the series (whether within the same continuity or not), ditching the previous films makes a lot of sense. We’re all aware of the actor’s recent real-life controversies and, most importantly, the fact that he may no longer be cut out for such an action-packed role. Also, the post-original trilogy story just didn’t resonate with critics and die-hard fans, so sooner or later this road was going to hit a dead end. In fact, the most relevant IP recently is the tie-in content for Sea of Thieves in 2021.
In addition to the above attempts, another option on the table is a script by Craig Mazin (The Last of Us, Borderlands) co-written with original Pirates scribe Ted Elliott, Disney seems to like the script but hasn’t moved forward with development so far as far as we know.
