An email sent to all Meta Quest developers details Meta’s end-of-life policy for the original Oculus Quest. The email states that any new apps or games after April 30, 2024 may support the original Oculus Quest. Additionally, apps and games released after April 30 will not appear when searching on Oculus Quest 1.
Meta announced its initial plans to remove support for Quest last January, but the original date for banning new apps was extended by several months. Initially, Meta planned to stop releasing new Quest 1 apps starting January 1, 2024.
What this all means is that after May 1, developers will no longer be able to make new games that support the original Quest, which means customers will need to upgrade to Quest 2 or Quest 3 if they want to continue playing brand new games. Many developers dropped support for the original Quest over the past year or so, and Meta stopped supporting multiplayer parties on the system in March 2023.
On top of that, Meta will release its last monthly security update in August 2024, marking the official end of life for the company’s first major standalone VR headset.
