Don’t worry if you feel this way Netflix For a while, the movies were kind of trashy, and the service’s new head of movies had similar thoughts.
You may not know his name, but you may be familiar with the work of Netflix film executive Dan Lin. Lin has produced blockbusters such as “The Lego Movie,” Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes” movies, and most recently served as an executive producer on Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Last month, he announced he was joining Netflix as the streaming service’s head of movies, a role he started this week. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Lin hasn’t been particularly impressed with the films Netflix has produced in the past.

Before taking on the role, Lin apparently received a call from Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer. According to THR sources, Jeremy Lin has been outspoken in saying that he doesn’t think the company’s movies are great and its financial situation isn’t great. In turn, Lin was asked to leave his production company, Rideback, to join Netflix – where he apparently now works, although he retained a stake in Rideback. Not surprisingly, Netflix’s production has changed dramatically with Lin’s arrival.
It’s clear that under Lin’s leadership, Netflix’s slate will primarily consist of mid-sized titles, focusing on genres like comedies, romantic comedies, and family movies, which are among Netflix’s most popular genres. There will still be some bigger movies and projects aiming for awards, but overall, Netflix will be producing fewer movies.
Hopefully this will do better for it overall, as games like Rebel Moon really weren’t very good, and its upcoming sequel doesn’t look much better either. I’m sorry, though, for those looking for movies in a variety of genres – the days of Netflix throwing money at anything and seeing what actually works seem to be over.
