How to pair Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (6th to 9th generation)
Remove the cap on the back of the pencil and you’ll see a Lightning connector inside. Plug it into the Lightning port on your iPad. The “Pair” option will appear on your iPad. Click on it to activate pairing.
That’s all you need to do before you need to pair again. This can happen when you restart your iPad, turn on airplane mode, or pair your Pencil with another iPad. If this happens, you’ll need to repeat these steps to re-pair.
How to pair Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad (10th generation)
You need a dedicated USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for this. Remove the cap from the pencil and insert it into the side of the adapter. Plug the USB-C cable into its other end, and plug the other end of the cable into your iPad.
When you see the Pair button appear on your iPad, tap it to activate pairing. After pairing successfully, you can unplug the Pencil from the adapter. It will stay connected until you pair it with another iPad or restart the iPad. If you did any of the above, follow these steps again.
How to pair Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with iPad
This is probably the easiest. Just place the pencil on your iPad where the volume controls are. It will automatically connect to the magnetic connector in the middle of that side. When this happens, you’ll hear a satisfying click. A window will pop up on your iPad notifying you that your Pencil is paired. You’re ready to pull it out and start using it.
How to pair Apple Pencil (USB-C) with iPad
For this operation, make sure your iPad is updated to at least iPadOS 17.1 or later. Slide the end of the Apple Pencil away to reveal the USB-C port inside. Plug the USB-C cable into the port and plug the other end into the iPad. Your pencil should be ready to use.
