One of the latest indie games to take the Steam bestseller page by storm is content warningits launch price is Absolutely not April 1st. Completely free to install (and keep!) within the first 24 hours of release, it’s no wonder so many players are flocking to the content warning to see what this strange game is all about.but Now that the free Steam giveaway is over, is Content Warning still worth it?
Yes and no. At just £6.69, this charming but slightly creepy content creator sim is worth checking out. To date, the game has been claimed by over 6.2 million players, and based on my experience, it’s easy to see why this game became an instant hit despite its initial zero-dollar price tag. That said, you also have to remember that this is a multiplayer game and can easily become repetitive, just like Lethal Company. So you might want to miss this one, or wait for some additional updates before buying.
On top of that, Content Warning is developed by Landfall Games, the same company responsible for games like Stick Fight: The Game and Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. So if you enjoyed Landfall’s goofy physics and unique visuals, I again encourage you to spend your spare money on the content warning. Although it can be minimal, it’s definitely a real treat with the right friends, and it definitely feels unique – even if it bears very obvious similarities to Lethal Company.
that’s right! Content warnings follow a very similar format to Lethal Company, a popular game on Steam. You will be in a group of up to four, wearing strange space suits with ASCII art faces, and will be sent to a different planet to explore every day. This time, instead of hunting for scraps and hiding from monsters, you’ll be looking for any scary creatures and shooting them. The scarier the footage you capture, the more views you’ll get when uploaded to SpookTube. More views means better chances of going viral, which means more money for more equipment, and more successful video shoots.
Perhaps my favorite thing about this game are the videos you and your friends inevitably make. After a hard day’s work in a mysterious black-and-white world surrounded by snail-like monsters, traps, drones, and more, you can pick up your camera and collect disks containing brief footage. Plug it into your home TV, and you and your friends can enjoy the fun (and sometimes questionable) comments pouring out of the chat while you comfortably reminisce about a horrific day in the past.
Given the small number of shots you can capture each day, you have to choose your moments carefully while not overlooking the importance of the opening and closing credits to your video. Overall, this leaves us with some of the worst yet simultaneously funniest compilations I’ve seen in a while. In some cases, like after our ship landed in front of a very aggressive drone and all of my compatriots died in a diving bell, our SpookTube uploads felt more like a found footage movie . Being able to easily save your uploads to your desktop is also a nice touch, and a big part of the fun of this game is sharing your SpookTube uploads and seeing other players’ adventures. I’m a sucker for any game that allows the community to interact actively (mostly sharing laughs). Content Warning certainly succeeded in bringing together a bunch of wannabe paranormal SpookTubers, that’s for sure.
In short, if you enjoy causing mayhem with your friends – and if you like Lethal Company – the content warning is without a doubt worth the purchase. However, if you’re hoping for more content than just create-for-yourself content or some sort of single-player mode, you might want to keep your wallet tight for a while.
